Today Deserves Your Presence

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking about time.

Less productivity.

Less efficiency.

More Time.

The kind that slips by quietly while we’re focused on what comes next.

As leaders, we’re often rewarded for thinking ahead.

We plan. We prepare. We anticipate. We build.

  • Those are valuable skills.

But I’ve noticed something lately.

Many of us have become so focused on the future that we’ve lost our ability to fully experience the present.

We’re preparing for the vacation while we’re on the vacation.

We’re thinking about next quarter during dinner.

We’re worrying about next year while living through this one.

The average life expectancy in the United States is approximately 79 years.

At 47, that means I have roughly 32 years remaining if life follows the statistical average.

I don’t share that to be dramatic.

I share it because a few years ago, I spent significant time bedridden and sick.

When your world suddenly slows down, your perspective changes.

You realize how much of life is spent assuming there will always be more time.

More summers.

More conversations.

More ordinary Tuesdays.

More opportunities to tell people you love them.

Life is precious partly because it isn’t guaranteed.

That realization has influenced how I think about leadership.

We often talk about vision, strategy, communication, and decision-making.

Those matter.

But I’ve come to believe that attention may be one of the most underrated leadership tools we have.

Because wherever your attention goes, your life follows.

The leaders I admire most aren’t simply focused.

They’re present.

Present in conversations.

Present with their families.

Present in moments that don’t make it onto calendars, social media feeds, or résumés.

This week, I want to leave you with a simple leadership practice.

I call it the Presence Audit.

When you find yourself rushing mentally into the future or replaying the past, pause and ask:

• Where are my feet?

• Where is my attention?

• What matters most right now?

The future deserves planning.

The past deserves reflection.

Today deserves your presence.

The older I get, the more convinced I am that a meaningful life isn’t built only through major milestones.

It’s built through fully inhabiting the moments we’re already living.

Stay Rooted, not rushed.
